In 2012, Calamarie continues to think big about our collections, our artisans, and ways of giving back. It is the artisans who really in the end support us and give our work meaning. Mery and her sister Cecilia, our head artisans, continue to lead our efforts in Colombia, dreaming up new creations for our collections. They inspire me each day through their creativity, dedication, persistence and faith.

To honor these amazing women and YOU, we are committed to building a socially responsible business you can be proud to support. We are resolved to act like a stream - to flow with the challenges, embrace uncharted currents and test new approaches to yield little treasures made from the earth’s natural resources and by artisans who create with their heart. We promise to deliver honest beauty and the joy that comes with it.

As you know, I am a huge supporter of Calamarie - a DC-based fashion house working with Colombian artisans to produce handcrafted jewelry and handbags. This past month, El Nina is drenching Colombia, leaving devastating results. In an effort to provide economic relief to the artisans living in these affected areas, Catalina Lemaitre, founder of Calamarie, has created Mochila for Sunshine. The following is a letter she sent her colleagues that I would like to share with you with hope that you support this very worthy cause. I plan to spend three weeks in Colombia with Catalina and her husband (Dec. 28 - Jan. 17) meeting the artisans and surveying the devastation. Stay tuned for an account of our travels.

Calamarie promotes Colombian artisans

Fair trade products often conjure images of hemp bracelets and “hippy-fied” macabre purses made from artisans in remote villages in South America or Africa. However, that was yesterday. Today, buyers are creating a market for artisans using recycled materials from metals to plant seeds fashioned into modern accessories and apparel.

Catalina Lemaitre, founder of Calamarie, has returned to her native Colombia to promote eight artisans whose designs evolve from all things organic.

Last night at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the stars aligned. Bringing together pioneers of the environmental movement in fashion, art, beauty, architecture, and interior design to celebrate the event, “Eco Chic: Night of Stars and Rising Stars”. The occasion, held on the eve of the 40th anniversary of Earth Day was the first of its kind; promoting awareness of Eco and Ethical Design, while recognizing the exemplary efforts of a few, key professionals on their pursuit of excellence.

A new open- air market that will be running through the spring and summer at the corner of Fenton and Silver Spring Avenues in Silver Spring. My find of the market was Calamarie accessories.
