Calamarie Eco-Friendly Accessories Debut at New York International Gift Fair
Contemporary Design Mixes with Traditional Art Forms, Techniques, and Recycled Materials
Dried orange peels discarded by Colombian juice vendors are appearing on some of the most fashionable women around the world—in the form of bright, beautiful roses, strung into necklaces along with beads made from seeds, nuts and beans. Those materials are some of the natural “ingredients” in unique and wearable pieces designed by Catalina Lemaitre, founder of Calamarie-Traditional Art Reinterpreted. Calamarie will be exhibiting for the first time at the New York International Gift Fair, January 26-30, 2013 in Handmade Global Booth #134.
Calamarie’s Orange Peel collection is inspired by “roses” made from the discarded peels collected from juice vendors. The skins are thoroughly cleaned before undergoing one-to-two-week sun-drying, shaping and dying process that results in a lovely, wearable rose. The flowers are then combined with seeds, vegetable ivory, coffee beans, and other natural materials to create necklaces, bracelets, earrings, pins, hair combs and belts. In a dried state, the orange peel roses are durable and have the added benefit of retaining a subtle natural perfume.
The designs pay homage to the culture, arts and crafts of the indigenous communities across Colombia as well as to the inventiveness and creativity of modern day artisan’s art. A fair trade model at its core, Calamarie establishes long-term relationships with Colombian artisans who use traditional and innovative materials and techniques. For the majority of these women artisans, their craft is their sole income. Catalina travels to Colombia three times a year to oversee production and develop new designs.
Calamarie’s affordable, elegant and well-crafted jewelry mixes equally well with summer dresses and evening attire as it does with a T-shirt and jeans. New designs for Spring/Summer that will be launched at the New York International Gift Fair include pieces that incorporate silk cocoons and gilding. Calamarie is sold online, and at specialty boutiques and museum shops across the country--for more information, go to www.calamarie.com.
